Lisa OppenHiem

Influenced by her background in structural/materialist filmmaking, Lisa Oppenheim (American, born 1975) is interested in exploring the ways in which a photograph can record both its subject and the process by which it was made. In three bodies of work dating from 2010 to present, she enlists the very entities depicted in the negatives – the sun, the moon, and smoke / fire – in the act of exposing them. Although they sound scientific, the titles of two of these bodies of work, Heliograms and Lunagrams, are made up, combining the name of the camera-less photogram technique and the source of light by which the enlarged negatives have been contact-printed.

For the past decade Lisa Oppenheim’s work has demonstrated an increasingly complex and layered interest in the history and theory of photography as a medium that, more than others, “engages with the world.” Her background in structural/materialist filmmaking has led her to explore the ways in which a photograph can record both its subject and the process by which it was made. This is most evident in three bodies of work dating from 2010 forward that enlist as the means of exposure the very entities depicted in images she has culled from historical archives or from the Internet.

Claire-louise Pitman is an eco-conscious, disabled, cameraless artist. This is done by using sustainable photographic light processes such as chlorophyll printing, cyanotype printing, and scanography, meaning no harm has been done to the environment. With this in mind, the artist avoids purchases of new materials or equipment when working on projects. This can be done by using items we already own. Adding more waste to what we have already accumulated in this creative industry is not needed.

Claire-louise Pitman was born in Somerset where she had her first major operation at just a few months old. As a child, she enjoyed forest school. Now she is closer to nature because of it. College is where she found photography in GCSE art. At college, she studied fine art for 4 years which led her to being a photography graduate at Plymouth university. Her work has been exhibited as a group in; Somerset, Plymouth, Romania and New York.
